A Russian Herbal

Traditional Remedies for Health and Healing

Herbal

This project is the result of my friendship with Igor Zevin, who was my Russian pen-pal in the early 1990's. In the spirit of perestroika, we decided to collaborate on a book (along with his wife, Lilia) that would bring the secrets of Russian herbalism to the West for the first time.

Russia has one of the world's oldest herbal traditions, and herbs still play a major role in healing today. Every medical school has a department devoted to the study of medicinal herbs, and many herbs are tested in laboratories and clinical trials, just like allopathic drugs are in the United States.

Published in April 1997, the book explains the folkways, properties and uses of the best-known Russian herbs. It also contains nearly a hundred herbal recipes that are used to treat a wide range of health problems, including heart disease, migraine, arthritis and high blood pressure. Many of the techniques for preparing and using herbs were previously unknown in the West.
